All arrangements have been made for the Sri Lanka Surf Championship 2010 in Arugam Bay (Pottuvil – Eastern Province). Scheduled from 01st to 04th July 2010, this is the fourth edition of the championship. The highlight this year will be the first ever women’s contest of the championship.
This championship, initiated by Crystal Holidays (Pvt) Ltd, sponsored by Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) & Sri Lankan Airlines and officiated by UK Pro Surf Association (UKPSA) has been a huge success since its launch in 2004.
Last year’s edition being the first international event post civil war in the island, brought in more than 60 surfers from UK, South Africa & Australia (including some of the best in the world) supported by the local community which hosted a local contest on the first day under UK judges. More than 30 surfers from Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna & Arugam Bay participated at the local contest.
The winner of last year's edition was Richie Sills of South Africa while Alan Stokes (Newquay), Mark Harris (Newquay) and Sam Lamroy (Newcastle) achieved second, third and fourth places respectively. W. L. U. Asanka Sanjeeva of Arugam Bay was selected as the Local Champion.
With no more security concerns in the beautiful island of Sri Lanka, it is expected that this year will see a higher number of surfers vie for the prize money of GBP 5,000. The spectatorship too would undoubtedly increase with growing interest for holidays & activities on the pristine beaches of the Eastern Province.
