Many begin the arduous 5 mile climb to the misty mountain top, also known as "Sri Pada" (sacred footprint), around midnight. They reach the 2,238 meter high peak, the Island's fourth highest, at dawn to witness a glorious sunrise and mountain shadow, cast by the rising sun onto the clouds. The mountain is sacred to four religions Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. For the Buddhists, the imprint on the summit of the mountain is the hallowed footprint of lord Buddha (Sri Pada). The Hindus believe that the footprint is that of God Shiva. Christians consider it the sanctified footprint of Adam and hence the title "Adam's Peak"
